The Sunflower Electric Power Corporation owns and operates the transmission lines within the Southwest Power Pool's (SPP) balancing area, where SPP is the Regional Transmission Organization. The City is connected to the 115 kV bulk transmission system, where the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency provides its power supply demands. The Electric Department provides safe, reliable and affordable electric service to approximately 12,500 homes and businesses, by operating and maintaining reliable electrical generation, three 12 MW Siemens SGT 400 natural gas turbines, and over 250 miles of distribution lines. The Garden City Electric Utility System is owned and operated by the City of Garden City, in southwest Kansas.
